Princess Astrid of Norway’s funeral took place at Ris Church in Oslo on September 23, the Norwegian Royal Court confirmed in its report of the ceremony.
King Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Queen Sonja joined her close family. Guards stood beside her coffin, which was draped in Norway’s flag.
Who attended?
Foreign royal guests included Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria, Belgium’s Princess Astrid and Prince Lorenz, Prince Jean of Luxembourg and Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein.
The court’s photographs show a wreath from Britain’s Princess Anne. That is not evidence that she attended.
The ceremony and her public service
Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg delivered a tribute on behalf of the government. Astrid’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren placed red roses on the coffin, which King Haakon helped carry out with family members.
Astrid, who died aged 94, served as Norway’s first lady from 1954 to 1968 and continued undertaking official engagements later in life.
In the Palace’s statement announcing her death, King Haakon recalled that Astrid took on the role at just 22 after Crown Princess Märtha’s death. He praised her support for the family and concern for vulnerable people.
Reuters reported that her final public appearance was at her brother King Harald’s funeral on September 9. Astrid died two days later.
