Meta's social media platforms Facebook and Instagram experienced a global outage on Sunday, disrupting access for thousands of users worldwide.

According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, users began reporting issues with both Facebook and Instagram on mobile and desktop devices at around 9:30 a.m. Reports surged rapidly and peaked at approximately 10 a.m., with more than 120,000 users reporting problems accessing the platforms.

The disruption appeared to be short-lived, as services on both platforms gradually returned to normal by around 10:40 a.m. Meta has not yet disclosed the cause of the outage.

In an earlier statement, the technology company acknowledged the issue, saying: "We are aware that people are currently having trouble accessing our services. We are working on it."

The outage affected several Meta business and developer services, including Facebook Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite, Messenger API for Instagram, Messenger Platform, and WhatsApp Business Platform.

On Facebook Ads Manager's status page, Meta said it was recovering from an earlier disruption that affected advertisers' ability to access and view ad performance reports.

"We are recovering from an earlier outage that caused some advertisers to have trouble accessing or viewing ads reporting, and services are in the process of being restored. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused," the company stated.

Meta added that its engineering teams were working to fully restore affected services and resolve any remaining issues.

Facebook and Instagram are among the world's largest social media platforms, serving billions of users globally. While the outage lasted for just over an hour, it temporarily disrupted communication, business operations, and advertising services for users across multiple regions.
