It started with a standard post match interview following the Portugal Vs DR Congo clash.

After Portugal's disappointing performance against DR Congo resulted in 1-1 draw in their opening game of 2026 world cup. Midfielder Joao Neves was asked about Cristiano Ronaldo, the superstar for Portuguese team for the past decade.

A journalist asked Neves: “This Portugal team is very collective. It’s also Cristiano Ronaldo’s last World Cup. How do you manage all that having such a big star but also a strong team with numerous other big players at this World Cup?”

To which Neves replied:“We know what Cristiano Ronaldo has done for our national team and for the world of football. But at this moment I feel that for him, and for everyone, he’s one of us, one more guy trying to help. He’s no different to the rest of us and he will contribute like we all will."

João Neves intention was clear; he meant that this is a team sport, and Ronaldo is a part of team and they will figure it out together, as a team.

His statement was taken out of context and clips with the interviewer went viral and social media gave it a new narrative claiming João Neves had called Ronaldo an ordinary player. Which was never the context of his interview anyway.

Some toxic Ronaldo fans began to bully João Neves, even bringing his family into the controversy which ultimately forced João Neves partner Madalena Aragao to limit comments on her profile. But this was not the end to this drama another fake screenshot made rounds on internet that she replied "Go tell your GOAT to retire" and it went viral quickly, and many fans without verifying if it was real or fake began reacting to it with even more intensity.

This situations shows that no one within the Portugal camp was at fault. A misrepresentation of quote and a fake social media post combined together created a distraction they don't want right now.

You gotta feel bad for João Neves and Ronaldo. This shows how the 2026 world has created a toxic imaginary world of their own.
