A new medical study publish on july 13,2026 has found that healthy gut bacteria may help protect people from a dangerous fungal infection. The research was led by scientist at UT southwestern Medical Center and published in the scientific journal cell Host and Microbe. The study shows that when good bacteria in the Gut break down dietary fiber ( fiber from fruits ,vegetable, beans, and whole grains). They produce natural substances that can stop a harm full fungus called CANDIDA albinos from growth too much. This discovery could help doctors develop new treatments for people with weak immune system such as cancer patients or people who have received stem cell transplants
How A Gut Protects the Body
The human body contains trillions of tiny living organisms including bacteria fungi and viruses. Together they are called the gut micro biome. Most of these microorganisms are helpful and work together to keep the body healthy. Normally good bacteria control harm full germs and stop them from growing too much. However some people lose this healthy balance. This can happen after taking antibiotics for a long time, receiving cancer treatment having a stem cell transplant or living with a weak immune system. When this balance is disturbed Candida albinos a fungus that normally lives in the body can grow too much. This may cause serious fungal infections that can spread through the body and become life-threatening..
What Scientists Discover
These researchers wanted to understand how good bacteria stop Candida albinos from growing. They found that the healthy gut bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids ( SCAFs) when they digest dietary fibre. These natural substances include butyric acid, propionic acid, and acetic acid. In laboratory experiments, scientists, added these fatty acids to Candida growing in dishes, They found that the fungus grew much more slowly as the amount of these fatty acid increased. Among the three satyric acid and propionic acid worked better than acetic at stopping the fungus
How THE Natural Substance Works
This researcher also discovered how these fatty acids fight the fungus. They found that fatty acids:
Reduce the fungus ability to absorb glucose(sugar) which its main source of energy
Made it harder for the fungus to use sugar and other nutrients.
Increased the acidity again the fungal cells.
Because of these changes the fungus could not produce enough energy to grow and spread. This helped keep the harm full fungus under control and allowed the healthy bacteria to stay in balance.
Testing the Discovery in THE Mice
The scientist also tested their discovery with mice. They found that the treatment worked much better in mice that had normal gut. Bacteria than in mice that had no gut bacteria. This shows that healthy. The researcher also changed some bacteria so they could no longer make fatty acids. In thise, mice the treatment became much less effective. This proved these natural substances are a key part of protecting the gut from fungal infections.
New Possible Treatment
The scientists created a new treatment by joining a type of dietary fiber called inulin with propionic acid. When the mice at this mixture, this gut bacteria broke down the fiber and released prop ionic acid directly into the large intestine where Candida albinos usually lives. The treatment greatly reduced the amount of the fungus in the mice, this suggests that similar treatments may one day help protect people people who are at high risk of fungal infection.
