According to the latest State of Retreats 2026 report by BookRetreats.com, Sri Lanka has been named the world’s top wellness travel destination for 2026 due to an increase in global demand for health-focused vacations.
The report talks about a major change in travel choices with more preference for holidays that are focused on mental well-being, relaxation, concentration and total healing instead of traditional sightseeing holidays. Every year, more and more people choose Sri Lanka as their go-to destination for a health and wellness trip.
The research also revealed that nearly half of all American travellers are planning to spend on wellness retreats in 2026 and on things like yoga, meditation, spa treatments, and trips to beautiful natural spots. More people are choosing holidays that actually make them feel good, inside and out.
Travel experts say one big reason Sri Lanka is so popular is that it has been practising Ayurveda, a traditional, all-natural form of healing, for over 2,000 years. That kind of deep-rooted history makes it feel genuine and trustworthy. A mix of tropical landscapes, wellness resorts, and cultural traditions has helped the country become an increasingly popular destination for travellers looking for both a physical and mental recharge.
The country’s selling point has been its affordability. Sri Lanka stands out well with many other wellness destinations on the basis of multi-day wellness retreats at relatively accessible prices, making it attractive to international visitors.
This growing interest in Sri Lanka is part of a much bigger worldwide shift. More and more people around the globe are making health and well-being a priority when planning their trips, and the wellness travel industry is expected to grow even bigger in the years to come.
