Four time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen is facing alot of reliability issues in the 2026 season. The current drivers championship has been nothing short of a misery for the Dutch driver, with mechanical faults costing him a massive haul of points. In context to his dominant 2021–2024 era and his intense 2025 title charge, Verstappen has yet to stand on the top step of the podium this year.
When looking at who is to blame, the statistics point heavily toward the machinery. Verstappen has already suffered two costly DNFs, one in China and another at the Monaco Grand Prix. While some might label his misfortunes as simple bad luck, the mechanical issues returned during the Austrian GP weekend. In the FP1 session, his car triggered anti stall twice during the opening minutes.
The trouble didn't end there. During the FP2 session today, Verstappen suffered a heavy crash at the high speed Turn 9. However, investigations by Red Bull and his teammate, Isack Hadjar, cleared the blame off the driver. They uncovered a major issue with the new upgrade package, pointing to a potential rear wing malfunction. The data suggests the car’s straight line drag reduction system failed to close properly as Verstappen decelerated into the corner.
This pushed Max verstappen back to P5 on the grid for the Austrian grand prix.
Following the crash today the red bull boss has apologised to max publicly and took the full responsibility for the crash.
Moving onto Austria grand prix Max verstappen needs to pull off a miracle to stay relevant in the driver's championship currently dominated by the youngstar Kimi antonelli.
