New York politician Zohran Mamdani has sharply criticized the Trump administration’s reported plan to increase Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in New York City, calling for solidarity with immigrant communities amid rising political tensions.
The reaction comes after reports that the Trump administration is preparing to expand federal immigration enforcement operations in the city as part of a broader crackdown on undocumented immigration.
Reacting to the development, Mamdani said he would stand firmly with immigrant communities and reject what he described as efforts to create fear.
“We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities,” he said.
Mamdani highlights role of immigrants in U.S. society
Mamdani also emphasized the contribution of immigrants to American sports and civic life, particularly highlighting soccer in the United States.
He stated that the sport would not exist in its current form without immigrant participation.
“Soccer would not exist without immigrants. Immigrants play and coach the game, work in the stadiums, fill the stands, and make celebrations like the World Cup possible,” he said.
He further noted that several players in the U.S. men’s national soccer team are immigrants, underscoring the role of migration in shaping American sports culture.
Trump administration ICE expansion plan
The controversy follows remarks from Tom Homan, who has been serving as a key figure in border enforcement strategy under former President Donald Trump.
Homan told Fox News that New York City will see a significant increase in ICE activity.
“You are going to see more ICE agents than you have ever seen in New York City. And it’s coming,” he said, adding that an operational plan had already been reviewed.
He did not provide a timeline for the deployment.
Political tensions with New York leadership
The reported plan is expected to intensify tensions between the federal government and New York state authorities.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has previously supported legislation limiting certain law enforcement practices, including restrictions on local officers’ involvement in federal immigration enforcement activities.
The law also includes provisions restricting law enforcement use of face coverings during official duties.
Immigration debate intensifies in U.S.
The development comes amid renewed national debate over immigration enforcement in major U.S. cities, particularly those governed by Democratic leadership.
Immigration policy has remained a key political issue in the United States, with federal and local governments often clashing over enforcement authority, sanctuary policies, and civil immigration procedures.
Analysts say the latest dispute highlights ongoing divisions between federal immigration enforcement priorities and local governance approaches.
