Australia has been ranked as the 20th most peaceful country in the world in the latest Global Peace Index 2026 and has moved up four places compared to last year. The Global Peace Index measures the level of peace in 163 countries and territories by looking at factors such as safety, crime, political stability, and conflict.
Australia's higher ranking comes at a time when many countries are becoming less peaceful. According to the report, 99 countries recorded a decline in peacefulness, which made it one of the largest global setbacks since the index was first introduced nearly 20 years ago.
Experts say Australia's improvement reflects its stable society, relatively low levels of violent conflict, and strong public safety. While no country is free from challenges, the report suggests Australia continues to be one of the safer and more stable places to live.
The latest ranking also highlights the growing importance of peace and stability as many parts of the world continue to face political tensions, conflicts, and security concerns.
