The four time world champions have failed to progress past the quarter finals, over the last 12 years, and this time they didn't even manage to make it through round of 32, marking their first ever penalty shootout defeat in World Cup history.

Germany looked in great form after a dominant 7-1 victory against Curacao, However momentum shifted following a defeat against Ecuador in their final group stage match, leading to today's shocking exit after losing to Paraguay.

The Germans dominated the first half, restricting Paraguay to very few chances. But a defensive disaster left Julio Enciso completely unmarked near the penalty spot, allowing Paraguay to open the scoring with a free header. Germany did manage to fight their way back into the tie when Kai Havertz scored in the second half to level the score, sending the match into extra time.

Just when they thought they won it in the first half of extra time, Jonathan Tah's header was controversially ruled out by VAR for an off the ball foul on the keeper, forcing the game into penalties. In the shootout, Germany suffered their historic heartbreak after key misses from the spot, including the decisive final penalty hit over the bar by Tah.

As one of the biggest upsets of the current tournament, Germany heads home early, while Paraguay advances to the round of 16, where they will most likely face France.
