Keir Starmer has announced to step down as UK Prime Minister on Monday, June 22, 2026, leaving a vacant seat of leadership after facing the intense pressure from members of his own political party. He led the Labour Party for 2 years, observing massive political shifts in the United Kingdom.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question. And I accept that answer with good grace”.
Starmer’s position became increasingly difficult over recent weeks followed by several losses for his party in nationwide local elections. Things escalated when former Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, Starmer’s major political rival entered the parliament after winning a special election.
Starmer began to face a major rebellion from his colleagues and cabinet ministers, which ultimately forced him to accept the end of his leadership era. Though he is yet to remain as PM until a new leader is chosen.
Burnham comes out to be as the strongest contender for the seat as he has major support from other high-profile politicians. Almost confirming that he will most probably be leading without going into an intense internal contest.
Starmer’s troublesome time in office finally comes to an end, within a short span of time, having been heavily weighed down by economic challenges and internal political conflicts. Now the United Kingdom is set to welcome its seventh prime minister in just ten years. Now it is to be seen whether the new leadership would be able to restore stability.
