Last of Us Part 2 released in 2020, receiving widespread praise from critics and managed to get the Game of the Year title within that year’s Game Award show. However, while the players enjoyed its campaign extensively, many remained unhappy that there was no multiplayer option.
The original Last of Us (TLoU) was best recognized for its single-player experience. But in addition to the single-player experience, TLoU featured a popular multiplayer element called Factions. Instead of seeing Factions return in TLoU Part 2, many series fans were promised a stand-alone TLoU multiplayer experience. The multiplayer project was discontinued, and there hasn't been a true TLoU vs multiplayer game in more than ten years.
Naughty Dog, the developer behind TLoU franchise, is working on creating Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. TLoU Part 2 is six years old, and it is extremely improbable that the game would ever have a PvP option similar to Factions. In light of this, modder Speclizer has made the decision to create their own TLoU Part 2 multiplayer mode in which a variety of game characters engage in combat. Recently, Speclizer posted a 25-minute clip of their TLoU Part 2 multiplayer mod, promising to deliver it in September. The drawback is that PlayStation players will be left out.
Although it seems sense that the TLoU Part 2 multiplayer mod will only be accessible for the PC version of the game, enthusiastic PlayStation players may still be disappointed. Therefore, even if modders can create mods for games like TLoU Part 2, they won't be able to do the same for upcoming projects like a possible The Last of Us Part 3, so hopefully that game has a built-in multiplayer function.
There have been previous hints about The Last of Us Part 3, an official announcement has not yet been made. It's possible that the effort that went into TLoU Online may be incorporated into a possible Part 3 so that it could feature a multiplayer mode like to Factions to complement its single-player experience.
The fact that modders like Speclizer are taking the initiative to create a TLoU multiplayer experience for fans on PC is highly appreciated. It's unfortunate that the majority of future PlayStation titles will not be available on PCs.
