Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank named their daughter Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank following her birth in Lisbon on August 3, 2026.
The baby is their third child, joining sons August and Ernest. In her announcement, Eugenie linked the name to people the couple admire and to England and Portugal, according to The Nightly’s report, with PA.
What is known about the name
Elizabeth honours Eugenie’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Reporting identifies Queen Adelaide, the wife of William IV, and Maria Adelaide of Portugal as historical associations behind Adelaide.
The Nightly described Annina’s connection as personal and not publicly explained by the couple. Associated Press reported that Annina is a close friend’s name. Neither account supports the earlier assertion in this article that it honours Princess Anne.
An overseas birth was not a royal first
Adelaide’s birth in Portugal was not the first overseas birth in the British royal family. Prince Harry and Meghan’s daughter Lilibet was born in California in June 2021, as their birth announcement reported by The Guardian confirms.
Lilibet’s name also honours Queen Elizabeth II’s family nickname; her middle name, Diana, honours Harry’s mother. It was therefore misleading to portray her name as a rejection of family naming traditions.
