On Sunday, June 28, 2026, The 35-year-old England Test captain officially revealed the news to his team mates and the dressing room during their third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. During the match on Monday June 29, 2026, when the all-rounder was in the middle of a bowling spell, he publicly announced his retirement, which came as a shocker for the cricketing world.

Speaking after his final match, he admitted that leading national team was demanding relentless mental and physical toll, which lead to severe burnout.

“It might sound quite selfish, but this decision is genuinely the best thing for me right now”. He said “Over the last 6 to 12 months, everything that I’ve done over a long period of time has taken its toll. Being in this role as captain there’s some negative effects to doing it. I just burned myself out”.

Just weeks ago Stokes was dropped for the second Test match at the Oval after breaching a team curfew during a night out in London. Although he was cleared of any official wrongdoing and returned to captain the side for the final Test, Stokes admitted that the drama added more stress to an already exhausting year.

Despite the bitter taste of a series ending defeat, Stokes has left behind a legacy as one of the greatest clutch player in cricket history, British sport has ever produced. He remains the second player in cricket history to cross the dual milestones of 7000 Test runs and 250 wickets. More than the records, he will forever be defined by the impossible: his breathtaking, match winning 84* in 2019 World Cup Final and his legendary 135* at Headingly during the 2019 Ashes.

England Head Coach Brendon McCullum paid tribute to his departing skipper, commenting that Stokes’ impact “transcends cricket”.

The Home Ashes series is approaching in 2027, the England hierarchy faces an immediate crisis. Now the search for the successor begins. Cricket insiders strongly expect vice-captain Harry Brook to take over as the next captain.

For Stokes however the heavy lifting is done. He was asked if he would be comfortable watching the the next Ashes from his sofa, he replied:

“I am incredibly happy with everything right now”.
