Lionel Messi scored his 100th Inter Miami goal as the club beat Cruz Azul 2-0 to win the Campeones Cup, then helped settle the match with an assist for Casemiro.
Reuters reported the milestone on September 17. The 100-goal total covers Messi’s appearances for Miami across all competitions, rather than MLS league matches alone.
Two headers decided the final
According to MLS’s match account, Messi opened the scoring in the 24th minute by heading in Luis Suárez’s cross.
Miami’s second came in the 81st minute. Messi delivered the corner and Casemiro headed past goalkeeper Kevin Mier, leaving Cruz Azul with a two-goal deficit late in the contest.
It was also Miami’s first trophy at its new stadium, which opened in April. Managing owner Jorge Mas celebrated that milestone after the match and said the club was still aiming for more silverware.
What the milestone counts
There are two separate achievements here: a club scoring landmark for Messi and a trophy for his team. Neither should be confused with an MLS regular-season goal total or a league championship.
That distinction matters when comparing football records. A goals tally needs its competition scope, while a trophy claim needs the name of the tournament. In this case, Miami won the Campeones Cup; Messi’s century spans his club career with the Herons.
His contribution was decisive at both ends of the scoring sequence: the opener from Suárez’s delivery, followed by the corner that gave Casemiro the chance to put the result beyond Cruz Azul.
